projects, events, and the wild, wild west!

Tomorrow, I’m going to hang the last piece in a room I designed for a precious couple that I met last year at Wilson Bank and Trust‘s Southern Home and Garden Expo. This is a great event WB&T has put on for years to showcase local building, design, and garden contractors, and I’ve met some of my favorite clients at this event.  The expo is fast approaching weekend after next, and I’m looking forward to it being in our new Convention Center this year.

The room I’m putting the finishing touch on tomorrow is one that was completely out of my design aesthetic, and unlike any I’ve decorated before.  But I love a challenge, and this couple is completely delightful…..I’m kinda sad tomorrow will be the last day I will spend with them.  To give you a little idea of what I mean, the last element I’m hanging tomorrow is a small bearskin rug, and a vase for feathers.

Outdoors.  Bears.  Woodsy.  The West.  Wildlife.

These are some of the words used when first discussing this project with my clients.   Here are a couple of before photos of the space:

You’ll have to wait until I get some good after shots tomorrow to see just what we did with this space, but let’s just say this won’t be my last “woodsy” decor.  It’s been so much fun!  And no matter what profession you may be in, I believe it’s good to break out of your comfort zone as often as possible!

Another current project is for a young professional in Nashville.  He’s just purchased his first condo, and I’m so excited to have been hired to add a bit of decor and take this already nice space up just a notch.

Should have some prelim design elements pulled together this week, and can’t wait to share them!

And then there’s this.

This French Country beauty is incredible, and I have been consulting on some of the interior and exterior finishes.  Here’s a small sampling of finishes selected, and I do mean SMALL sampling.  The scope of this project is hard to even describe.

Last weekend, I attended the Real Estate Staging Association convention in Las Vegas.  This is a first class event put on by our national organization, and the weekend is packed full of training and networking-  I SO look forward to attending this each year.  Back in December, I learned that I was selected as one of the Top Ten Redesigners USA. by RESA.  The USA designation is because our association includes members in Canada as well.  I was SO honored to receive this award as it is voted on by my colleagues and board members of the organization.  I’m always humbled when someone enjoys my work, but when those in my own field selected my work to be included in the top ten….well that was an honor I will always be so proud of.

Here I’m with Shell Brodnax, CEO of RESA!

With my Tennessee RESA girls!

But then at the award night, I was blown away to win State President of the Year for RESA!  Our organization is growing by leaps and bounds, and I’ve been so excited to serve as TN State President last year and again this year.  The night was truly one that I won’t soon forget.

On Thursday night of this week, I’m tickled pink to have been invited by Scott Harris, a dear friend and local West Main Realty/ Century 21 real estate agent, to speak at an event put on by the committee he chairs of Young Professionals with EMTAR- The Eastern Middle Tennessee Association of Realtors.   I know as agents they are all familiar with real estate staging, but I’m going to tell them everything they don’t know about it.   So looking forward to this event!

On Friday, I’m headed with my #designcrawl girl and business bestie, The Decorologist, to the 2017 Antiques and Garden Show.

Nate Berkus.

Brooke and Steve Giannetti.

Yes, please!

So….. no doubt Friday will be full o’ fun!

oh and one last thing!

I just found out that I’m on the team to launch Rachel Macy Stafford‘s new book “Only Love Today.”  I’m sure you’ve heard of her…..she the “Hands Free Mama.”  This girl can write, y’all.  And she can write words that get right down deep to your soul.  I’ve only just begun, but I believe it may be my favorite of hers yet.  More on this one to come!

The Best Of 2016

Everything I read says 2016 was BAD, but I think it’s all a matter of perspective.

I mean, it’s not really what happens in life….but how you react to it, that determines how you see that event when looking back on it.  I thought 2016 was a great year!

So, given all the “Top blah, blah, blah…” posts I’ve been reading lately, I thought it high time to post my own for  Superior Construction and Design.  Especially since I’ve blogged with NO regularity whatsoever for about 6 months.  I’m going to do to try to do much better than that this year!  Because there are actually people who are still not on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.  How this is even possible- I’m not sure?  But, there are truly those that only keep up with me through my web site.

So……here is a little “best of” for 2016 and what all I’ve been up to:)

In January, I attended the IBS (International Builder’s Show) and the RESA (Real Estate Staging Association) Conference in Las Vegas!   It was a super fun trip and we got to see all kind of new building products.  If you are a construction nerd like I am, you know that just excited the fool outta me!  The hubs flew out with me, along with several of my design and staging friends.  Kristie, aka The Decorologist, attended the Builder’s Show also.  She is the Color Girl for LP (Lousiana Pacific) Smartside Building Products- so we hit all the booths we could while there.  Kristie scored an invite to the Home Advisor Cocktail Party, and it was such fun!

After the Builder’s Show, we changed hotels and geared up for RESA!  Our girl Molly of Music City Home Staging joined us- and we crammed in 2 full days of awesome info at RESA!  Now….the highlight of that trip was seeing a little show put on by Olivia Newton John…’ve heard of her, yes???  Well…..Molly’s hub, who plays bass for, ahem…..Eric Church……(is that name dropping???)  I digress.  Molly’s hub previously played bass for ONJ.  So we were escorted in all fancy-like to the show…..and then escorted all fancy-like up to ONJ’s dressing room.  It was nuts!!  ONJ came in and hugged Molly…..they’re old pals ya see!  Soooo super cool!  ONJ graciously took photos with us, and it was the greatest thing in the world to be standing right there with one of my childhood idols!   I totally missed the epic snowstorm we had here, so that was a bummer.  But.  ONJ!

Another highlight in January was being awarded the Best of Houzz again for the second year in a row!

In February, I participated in our local Construction Expo.  It is put on by Wilson Bank and Trust here in Lebanon and I’ve had a booth there for several years.  It is a great event, and just like anything done by WB&T, a class act event to be in!

I also attended the Antiques and Garden Show in Nashville with Kristie and we attended the lectures of BUNNY WILLIAMS and Windsor Smith.

and oh, the keynote was Gwyneth Paltrow……but did I mention Bunny Williams????

In the spring, I went to the Country Living Fair, which is so awesomely held in our little ol’ town!  I attended with a group that I’m part of called the Nashville Influencers.  We had a meet and greet with the Country Living editor, Rachel Hardage.  She was so sweet and we all chatted her up for a while!

Me with Rachel Hardage, editor

Kristie and I at the Fair

Several weeks later, my design crawl girl (that’s what we call each other cause we lurrrvvveeee to attend design-y events together and we get to call it WORK!) Kristie and I attended the O’More College Design House.  Here are a few pics of the beautiful home….

Enter July, and I was awarded the Wilson County Best of the Best Interior Decorator award by the Lebanon Democrat for the THIRD year in a row!!  Is that real???   This is SO very special to me because it’s voted on by the people of Wilson County.  The ones of you that know me and work with me.  That’s the real deal!  I’ve been so humbled each time, and still have to pinch myself to believe that it happened.  If that weren’t enough, I also have been a finalist for those same three years in the Builder category.  Now that just tickles me to pieces because- well…..being a contractor is typically a man’s job.  So to be a finalist in that category just makes me smile ear to ear!  Especially to be a finalist with the builders that were nominated- they were the cream of the crop.

I LOVE Max’s expression in this!!

In August, I attended a Houzz event with my #designcrawl girl-

September brought me to my friend, Melanie, to have some pro headshots done.  Been playing around with pics I’d had for a long time- it was time to step it up a notch and get real.

In October, the hubs and I celebrated our SILVER anniversary!  My dearest friend Denise threw us a small surprise get-together that was absolutely perfect- just as anything she does is!

Me with nearly life-long friends of mine, Denise and Phyllis

Then, I was off to Washington, D.C. to attend True Colour Expert training with the expert herself, Maria Killiam.  I’ve wanted to take this training for quite some time, but the timing never worked out.  This fall, it did.  Along with making some new friends, I can now add the status of True Colour Expert to my credentials.

November was HUGE!  What I didn’t mention above is that back in the summer, I had joined a select group of experts in my industry to collaborate on a book project. After working for several months, the book released on November 17th!  I’ve always wanted to write a book, and although I collaborated with several others, I can now say I’m a published author.  We flew to Canada for the red carpet release at a gala event and it was spectacular- truly a dream come true!  Then, when the book released on Amazon on Cyber Monday, we hit number ONE in two genres!  So now our publisher told us to add the words “best-selling” in front of the word author….she (our publisher) was over the moon!  (we were a bit excited as well!)

One other little thing that happened in November only a very FEW know about:  I was contacted by the show Property Brothers sometime late October.  They reached out concerning shows they are going to be filming in the spring in Nashville.  After several emails and phone calls, sending in a resume, (what???  I’ve actually NEVER had a resume.  EVER.  I do now thoough, lol!) the producers flew in from Canada and I met with them in Nashville. Although ultimately not getting/ taking the part (general contractor) I was really interested in meeting with them, seeing how the process of a television interview works, and learning the ins/ outs of what goes into production of one of these shows.  It was SUCH fun meeting with the producers, and I so enjoyed having the opportunity.  When they contacted me it came out of the blue, and it was quite humbling.  I’m honored to have had that experience.

On the first Saturday in December, my friend Michelle Moore had me on her radio show, The Power of Real Estate, to discuss my book.  Another surreal opportunity!  It was SO much fun!  Michelle is great at what she does, and it was really just like sitting there having coffee with a friend!

Later in the month I attended a little Domino book signing in Nashville (designcrawl!) and we chatted with the editor, Jessica Romm!

Jessica Romm and I as she signed my book-

With my girls- Amanda Carlson, The Interior Maven; Lori Pruitt, Lori Pruitt Designs, and of course- Kristi, The Decorologist .

The icing on the cake in December was being selected to serve a second term as Tennessee State President for RESA, and receiving the email  that I had been voted one of the Top 10 Redesigners in the U. S.!  Submission for this award was in the fall, so when I got the email, I had almost forgotten about sending in my entry.  We are once again flying to Vegas in a couple of weeks where I will receive the award.

So that’s it!  If you’ve made it this far, thanks for hanging in there.  I know that having a “job” doing what I love is only made possible by those that support me.  Whether I’ve done work for you, or you follow me on social media, or simply read my blog- YOU are the reason I get to do what I do.  I am keenly aware of that fact, and thank you for your continuous support!  I have lots of fun projects and several events coming us the first of this year- so hang around!

Oh, and if you subscribe to the site, you will be sent a link to my chapter in the book!!  How cool is that??  So what are ya waiting for??
